Part-Time Student Assistant – 2024/2025 Academic Year

King’s Library is hiring Part-Time Student Assistants to manage the Circulation Desk on evenings and weekends. With mandatory, paid training on Sunday, September 8th, regular shifts will begin Monday, September 9th, 2024. Shift assignments will remain consistent throughout the Fall Term, with a reassessment based on class schedules for the Winter Term. Student Assistants are responsible for organizing coverage of their shifts when not available, exceptions only made in emergency situations.

This is for current King’s College students only, and priority is given to students returning for their second year or above.

Responsibilities

Student Assistants are responsible for:

  • Creating a welcoming atmosphere and directing patrons to library resources and materials.
  • Basic reference assistance and understanding of how to navigate library resources and systems such as call numbers, the Novanet catalogue and King’s LibGuides.
  • Using the ALMA system to process loans, returns, renewals and requests, as well as updating patron records where necessary.
  • Answering the phone, answering questions and taking messages for full-time staff when necessary.
  • Shelving and shelf reading to maintain the order of the General and Reference Collections.
  • Light cleaning duties of the stacks and circulation areas.
  • End processing of new acquisitions.
  • Other tasks and projects as assigned.

Qualifications

Successful applicants will be approachable, reliable, able to work under their own initiative and have good communication and time management skills. They will be familiar with the processes and purpose of the King’s Library and have experience working with the public. Experience with filing, shelving, scanning and copying projects is considered an asset.

Shifts

Student Assistant schedules are set for the length of the semester. There will be a paid training session on September 8th, with regular shifts to begin September 9th until the Holiday Break in December. The schedule for circulation desk shifts is determined each term based on the course schedule and availability of all Student Assistants.

There will be times when Student Assistants are asked to fill in, back up or switch shifts with other Student Assistants when necessary; the candidates would preferably have some flexibility for evening and weekend coverage.

The applicant must be available for a minimum of two 3-hour shifts per week. Shifts are outlined in the availability sheet attached.

Pay rate

The base pay rate is minimum wage + $0.50.

How to Apply

Our People

Librarians

Our librarians are specialists who provide collections development, instruction, and research support for university programs and the wider King's community. Librarians all hold a master's degree in the applied disciplines of library, information or archival science, in addition to other credentials, relevant skills and experience.

Library Technicians

Working to give patrons a seamless experience, Library Technicians are often the first point-of-contact for library users and are here to provide circulation, reference, and access services. They have a range of backgrounds and education, and are graduates of library technician diploma programs.

Student Staff

Access to the library on evenings and weekends is only possible through the dedication of our Student Staff. They run the circulation desk and perform clerical duties, as well as take on the role of building monitor so that patrons can continue to use the space beyond the Librarians' 9 to 5. Any questions or services that are beyond the scope of what can be provided by the students will be passed along to our permanent staff as soon as they're next available, but don't hesitate to check with our Student Staff first! They're trained to help provide most circulation and research duties.
