Wireless Network

The Library is a wireless environment and the network is accessible with a Dal/King’s NetID.

Network Name: Dal-WPA2
Username: NetID with Capital Letters (eg. AA123456)
Password: Your NetID Password

Visiting students, faculty and staff from other institutions can log into the eduroam network if they have access through their institutions using the same username and passwords as they would use at their own campus.

For Community Borrowers without institutional access, the WiFi isn't available on personal devices, but the laptops in the Reading Room are connected to the network and available for use.

King's faculty and staff can request guest accounts for visitors; learn how by logging into the ITS Sharepoint. Please note that there are connection issues that mean guests cannot connect to the Wi-Fi with Chromebooks.

For help accessing the wireless network, please contact any of the IT Help Desks at Dalhousie University.

See also Dalhousie's page on Mobile Access, Apps, and eBooks.

Lockers

Lockers are available for rental in the Library on a per-term basis. Locks are supplied.

Due to limited availability, these are only available to current University of King's College students, faculty, and staff. Student ID will be needed for registration.

Locker fee is $5.00 per term (Summer, Fall, or Winter) plus a $5.00 deposit. Cash only.

Individual Study Rooms

There are six Study Rooms available on the Lower Level on a first come, first served basis. The size of room varies, each suitable for between 1 to 3 patrons.

These rooms can be used for:

  • Small group discussion.
  • Phone or video calls.
  • Use of voice-to-text technologies.

However, they are not soundproof, so we do ask that headphones are used when possible and volume is kept to a minimum.

Because these rooms are in high demand, we encourage that those looking for quiet, solo study locations use the individual study carrels in the further ends of the library.

Group Study Room

When not reserved for consultations, the Rare Book Consulting Room is available to King's students, faculty and staff as a Group Study Room during the Library's open hours.

Located to the right of the Circulation desk, the Group Study room is available on a first-come-first-served basis for groups of 2-6 people for a maximum of two 2-hour sessions per day.

For larger groups or for studies that require more than whispered discussion, please see the group study rooms available at the Wallace McCain Learning Commons.

To reserve this room in advance for the consultation of Rare Books, Archival, or Special Collections materials, please email the University Archivist at tracy.lenfesty@ukings.ca

Committee Room

The Committee Room is available for booking only by current King's faculty and staff for meetings. There must be a member of King's faculty or staff present for the duration of the booking.

Located at the end of the right-hand hall next to the Circulation desk, the Committee Room is only available by advanced booking for groups of up to 15 people. The room has use of both a chalkboard and a projector.

Those booking the room are responsible for ensuring their guests have Wi-Fi access if needed. Instructions on creating guest accounts are found through the Dal IT Department (this service is provided only to faculty and staff). Please note that there are service-wide connection issues that mean guests cannot connect to the Wi-Fi with Chromebooks.

Committee Room Policies:

  • There is no food or drink allowed in the Library, including the Committee Room. (Water bottles and drinks with sealed lids are permitted.)
  • If there is no appearance of those who booked the room 15 minutes after the scheduled arrival time, the rest of their booked time will be considered forfeit.
  • Because use of the space is highly requested, repeated unused bookings may result in loss of access to this service.

To book the room, please email library@ukings.ca.

If the Committee Room doesn't suit your needs or is unavailable at your required time, please visit the King's Events and Conference Services page or log in to the Dalhousie Campus Bookings page to see what other spaces are available to you.

Washrooms and Water Fountain

A gender-neutral accessible washroom and gendered washrooms can be found downstairs, at the front of the building just beyond the study rooms and lockers.

The water fountain is also a water bottle refill station and can be found in the same hallway.

Elevator

The elevator is directly across from the front doors, just past the Circulation desk.

It is available to everyone, please do not hesitate to use it at any time.

Computers

There are Chromebooks available for use in the Reading Room on the ground floor.

The patron is responsible for signing out of all personal accounts when finished.

  • Laptops cannot be returned outside 9am to 4:30pm, Mondays through Fridays, even if the Library is open.

  • Late fines will continue to accumulate until full-time Library Staff are able to assess the item and process the return.
  • A laptop that has not been returned 3 days after the due date will be considered Lost, and a replacement fee of $2,000.00 will be added to your account, in addition to the maximum overdue fines.
  • Once the item has been marked as Lost, all library borrowing privileges will be suspended until the debt has been resolved.
  • You are personally responsible if the laptop is lost, stolen, or damaged while checked out to your account. Do not leave the laptop unattended.

We encourage all patrons to return borrowed laptops as soon as they are no longer needed, even if that's before the due date. Not only does this provide access to others on the wait list, it reduces the risk of loss or damage while in your possession.

Any questions, or if you want to be added to the wait list, please email library@ukings.ca.
