These are some examples of accessibility services that can be provided, though it is not a fully comprehensive list. Please contact us to see if alternate services or other accommodations can be provided.
If you require accommodations beyond the Library's services, please see Accessible King's.
Check that Library Staff on hand are able to assist.
Phone: (902) 422-1271 ext. 171
Certain services can only be provided by full-time Library Staff, who are in from 9am to 5pm, Mondays through Fridays.
Evening and weekends are monitored by our Student Assistants. They will do what they can to make accommodations in the moment and assist in any way possible, but they may need to pass along the request to the next available full-time Staff.
You are able to hold items at the Circulation Desk for pickup. Choose the request option that works best for you from the list below.
You can place a hold request for any items by logging into your Novanet Account, searching for the title you want, and filling in the request fields, making sure to choose "University of King's College" as your Pickup Location.
If you have trouble with the online request system, you are welcome to call or email with the details of your request.
Call our desk at 902-422-1271 ext. 171 or email library@ukings.ca to let us know what titles you'd like to be placed on hold. Library Staff will let you know whether they're in King's Library, or if they need to be ordered for you.
The system's default notification system means you'll always receive an email when your item is ready to be picked up. If you would also like to be notified by phone, please tell our staff at the time of placing the request and they will call you as soon as the items are ready.
If you're browsing the Stacks in person, Library Staff can help with retrieval. Please ask at the Circulation Desk on the Main Floor for assistance.
You can request a scan from a book or journal held physically by King's Library and other Novanet Libraries. The file will be emailed to you when it's ready. Any photocopying or scanning of a copyrighted work will respect the fair dealing provisions of the Copyright Act of Canada.
Request a scan through the Novanet catalogue by logging into your Novanet Account and searching for the title you want.
Please note, not all physical items are able to be scanned for reasons such as fragility or size. If a title indicates that there is a physical item available at King's but there's no option to "Request Chapter or Article," use one of the following options to verify whether exceptions can be made.
If you have trouble with the online request system, you can call or email us with the details of your request.
Call our desk at 902-422-1271 ext. 171, or email library@ukings.ca to let us know the title and portion you need scanned. Library Staff will let you know whether it is available from King's Library, or if it needs to be requested from another library.
You will receive an email with the file once the scan has been completed.
If you're browsing the Stacks in person and aren't able to scan the required excerpt on your own, leave your request with Library Staff at the Circulation Desk on the main floor, and they will send you the scan within the expected 2-day turnaround.
If entering the building would be difficult, curbside pickup or drop-off services can be provided.
Please note that curbside assistance is only available during open hours OR until 8:00pm for security reasons.
If you would like someone to pick up hold requests on your behalf, you can designate a proxy borrower.
To prevent fraudulent use of your account, this service is only for items that have been placed on hold by you in advance.
If you only want someone to pick up a hold for you once in an urgent situation, you can put their name in the notes field of your online request or email us with the details, and we will make it clear that this proxy can only pick up the items you specify.
Either way, your proxy will need to bring the following to pick up your items:
They will go to the Circulation Desk for pickup, give your name and ID/B00# first, and then tell the staff that they're here to pick up on your behalf. Their ID will be checked against the name given in the notes.
If you would like the same person to regularly pick up your holds, you must first email us with their full name and ask that they be added to your account as a proxy. They will then be able to pick up requests for your account on your behalf at any time, without the need for specifying in the request notes. This will also allow them to pick up your requests at other Novanet Libraries.
If you have set up a permanent proxy and would no longer like them to pick up your requests please let us know as soon as possible so we can remove their access.
Beyond this service, all patron information is confidential and all other account information will be discussed solely with the registered patron. Information regarding current loans, overdue items and fines can only be discussed with a proxy if the patron is present or has given prior case-by-case permission.
For questions or concerns, please contact library@ukings.ca.
*These rooms are available to King's Students only. Community borrowers are welcome to use all other public study options in the Reading Room and the Lower Level.
The individual Study Rooms on the Lower Level are too small for most standard wheelchairs or other mobility aids. The Group Study Room on the Main Floor can be used as an alternative.
Because all study rooms are available on a first-come-first-served basis, if your visit is dependent on the use of an individual study space, please call us at 902-422-1271 ext. 171 before you arrive to see if the Group Study Room is currently in use. Any group in the room at the time of your call will have until the end of their 2-hour session, at which time your name will be put down to use it next.
If you're looking to use it in a Group Study Room capacity, the room will remain as a first-come-first-served option, and your group is welcome to work silently in the Reading Room until it next becomes available.
Otherwise, we encourage you to use Dalhousie's Room Booking site to book study spaces at other Dalhousie Library locations in advance, including study rooms in the nearby Wallace McCain Learning Common at the end of Lord Dalhousie Drive.
If there are any issues with lighting, please ask for assistance at the Circulation Desk.
Additional table lamps can be provided.
Overhead lights in the Lower Level Stacks are on a timer to conserve energy and can be turned on by pressing the buttons at the ends of aisles at regular intervals. The buttons are at a height of 4'6".
The lights in the Lower Level Stacks can be turned on all at once by Circulation Staff upon request.
There is a transport wheelchair available for in-building use.
This is not a self-propelled wheelchair. The user will need to bring someone with them to push the chair.
These tools are available to borrow from the Circulation Desk, and are for in-library use only. Staff at the desk are required to hold onto your student ID/library card until the item is returned.
Availability is limited and on a first come, first served basis.
