Library Accessibility

Summary

These are some examples of accessibility services that can be provided, though it is not a fully comprehensive list. Please contact us to see if alternate services or other accommodations can be provided.

If you require accommodations beyond the Library's services, please see Accessible King's.

Before You Start

Check that Library Staff on hand are able to assist.
Phone: (902) 422-1271 ext. 171

Certain services can only be provided by full-time Library Staff, who are in from 9am to 5pm, Mondays through Fridays.
Evening and weekends are monitored by our Student Assistants. They will do what they can to make accommodations in the moment and assist in any way possible, but they may need to pass along the request to the next available Library Staff.

Physical Retrieval

You are able to hold items at the Circulation Desk for pickup. Choose the request option that works best for you from the list below.

Online

You can place a hold request for any items by logging into your Novanet account, searching for the title you want, and filling in the request fields, making sure to choose "University of King's College" as your Pickup Location.

  • You will receive initial confirmation emails for every item you request letting you know that your request has been submitted.
  • You will then receive another email for every item you request letting you know when that item is ready to be picked up, at which point you will have one week to collect it before it is put back.
    • Items held at King's Library may take a few hours to be ready.
    • Items coming from other Novanet libraries will take 2 to 5 business days to be ready.

Phone

If you have trouble with the online request system, you are welcome to place requests by phone.

Call our desk at 902-422-1271 ext. 171 to let us know what titles you'd like to be placed on hold. Library Staff will let you know whether they're in King's Library, or if they need to be ordered for you.

The system's default notification system means you'll always receive an email when your item is ready to be picked up. If you would also like to be notified by phone, please tell our staff at the time of placing the request and they will call you as soon as the items are ready.

In Person

If you're browsing the Stacks in person, Library Staff can help with retrieval. Please ask at the Circulation Desk on the Main Floor for assistance.

Curbside Pickup/Drop-off

If entering the building would be difficult for you, curbside pickup or drop-off services can be provided.

Please note that curbside assistance is only available during open hours OR until 8:00pm, for security reasons.

Pickup:
  1. Place a request through your Novanet account, writing in the notes field "Curbside Pickup".
  2. Wait for the email to confirm that your item is ready to be picked up.
    • Requests can take a few hours to be filled if the item is in the King's Library, or several days if it's coming from another library.
  3. When your item is ready, park or wait at the back of the building, on Lord Dalhousie Drive.
  4. Ring the doorbell, or call the desk at 902-422-1271 ext. 171 and let us know you're here for a pickup.
    • Please provide your last name.
  5. Have your library card ready - Library Staff will come and collect that from you first.
  6. After scanning your card and your books, Library Staff will come back out and hand you your card and the items you requested.
Drop off:
  1. Park or wait at the back of the building, on Lord Dalhousie Drive.
  2. There is a Book Return Bin to the left of the back doors. If you can, pull the handle down towards you, place your items inside, and close it again.
  3. If this isn't possible for any reason, ring the doorbell, or call the desk at 902-422-1271 ext. 171 and let us know you're here for a drop-off.
  4. Library Staff will come and collect your items.

Proxy Borrower

If you would like someone to pick up hold requests on your behalf, you can designate a proxy borrower.

To prevent fraudulent use of your account, this service is only for items that have been placed on hold by you in advance.

Case-by-case:

If you only want someone picking up a hold for you once in an urgent situation, you can put their name in the notes field of your online request or email us with the details, and we will make it clear that this proxy can only pick up the specific items designated.

Either way, your proxy will need to bring the following to pick up your items:

  • Their own ID card (any form of ID with their full name) and;
  • Your student ID or your B00#

They will go to the Circulation Desk for pickup, give your name and ID/B00# first, and then tell the staff that they're here to pick up on your behalf. Their ID will be checked against the name given in the notes.

Long-term Proxy:

If you would like the same person to regularly pick up your holds, you must first email us with their full name and ask that they be added to your account as a proxy. They will then be able to pick up requests for your account on your behalf at any time, without the need for specifying in the request notes. This will also allow them to pick up your requests at other Novanet Libraries.

Removing Permissions:

If you have set up a permanent proxy and would no longer like them to pick up your requests please let us know as soon as possible so we can remove their access.

Beyond this service, all patron information is confidential and all other account information will be discussed solely with the registered patron; information regarding current loans, overdue items and fines can only be discussed with a proxy if the patron is present or has given prior case-by-case permission.

Study Room

*These rooms are available to King's Students only. Community borrowers are welcome to use all other public study options in the Reading Room and the Lower Level.

The individual Study Rooms on the Lower Level are too small for most standard wheelchairs or other mobility aids. The Group Study Room on the Main Floor can be used as an alternative.

Because all study rooms are available on a first-come-first-served basis, if your visit is dependent on the use of an individual study space, please call us at 902-422-1271 ext. 171 before you arrive to see if the Group Study Room is currently in use. Any group in the room at the time of your call will have until the end of their 2-hour session, at which time your name will be put down to use it next.

If you're looking to use it in a Group Study Room capacity, the room will remain as a first-come-first-served option, and your group is welcome to work silently in the Reading Room until it next becomes available.

Otherwise, we encourage you to use Dalhousie's Room Booking site to book study spaces at other Dalhousie Library locations in advance, including study rooms in the nearby Wallace McCain Learning Common at the end of Lord Dalhousie Drive.

Photocopies/Scans

You can request a photocopy or scan a chapter of a book or an article from a journal held physically by King's Library if you're not able to do so yourself.

Photocopy: Printed on paper at the same size as the physical item

Scan: Emailed in PDF format

You can ask for this service at the Circulation Desk or by emailing library@ukings.ca.

Any photocopying or scanning of a copyrighted work will respect the fair dealing provisions of the Copyright Act of Canada.

Expected turnaround time for this service is one regular business day.

Lighting

If there are any issues with lighting, please ask for assistance at the Circulation Desk.

Additional table lamps can be provided.

Overhead lights in the Lower Level Stacks are on a timer to conserve energy and can be turned on by pressing the buttons at the ends of aisles at regular intervals. The buttons are at a height of 4'6".

The lights in the Lower Level Stacks can be turned on all at once by Circulation Staff upon request.

Wheelchair

There is a transport wheelchair available for in-building use.

This is not a self-propelled wheelchair. The user will need to bring someone with them to push the chair.

These tools are available to borrow from the Circulation Desk, and are for in-library use only. Staff at the desk are required to hold onto your student ID/library card until the item is returned.
