A guide to archival research at King's

Consulting Materials

Archives have to be careful about rules and procedures in order to maintain the safety and integrity of the records they store. It is important to remember that because of its unique nature, if archival material is destroyed, stolen, or damaged, then the information those records contain could be lost forever. Please see our procedures below.

Rules for Rare Book Consulting Room and Archives Rooms

  • Absolutely no food or drink is allowed inside the Treasure Room (Archives room), the Archives office, or the Rare Book Consulting Room.

  • No pens are allowed on your person when you are consulting archival materials, as ink can cause damage. Pencils only.

  • Gloves are not necessary, but clean and dry hands are when handling materials.

  • Handle all archival material with care.

Procedures for Viewing Materials

  • You can request to view specific records by filling out the Non-Circulating Material Request Form after consulting the finding aids on King's' MemoryNS page, or you can reach out to the Archivist about subjects or events that you are interested in studying. After consulting the archivist via email or the phone (archive@ukings.ca; 902-422-1271 Ext. 119), you will book an appointment to view the records.

  • You can come in during your scheduled appointment time. The records will be ready for you in the Rare Book Consulting room, unless there is a specific reason for the materials to be viewed in the Archives room.

  • You can have as much time as needed to view the records, but can only view them while archival staff are working. This means viewing records past 5pm is not generally allowed.
